The Anonymous Poet

Protecting identities. A major concern for some of the refugees we met in the camp was for their families not to see them in this situation. We met an extraordinary poet who didn't want to be identified for this reason. He wrote a poem especially for us. 'I sailed in a sea with no port or captain, and I was reborn as a child from the womb of my crisis, with no uncles or brothers. I am the orphan, give me your attention one day, and you will hear with love, the sound of my melodies. I am the Syrian and I have never suppressed it, my voice echoed with it with all my consciousness'
